Review: The Angenieux 25mm f/0.95 Lens Was Used for NASA Moon Photos

If you want to pick up an interesting lens for your camera, check out the Angenieux 25mm f/0.95. It’s a somewhat hard-to-find lens that was once used by NASA to photograph the moon with a lunar probe.

Above is a 2-minute video intro and review of the lens by photographer Mathieu Stern. Stern says the lens is hard to find in France and is difficult to obtain for less than $1,700. In the US, you may be able to find one on eBay for less than $1,000.

Using a C-mount adapter, you should be able to mount the Angenieux 25mm f/0.95 to any mirrorless camera. It’s designed for smaller sensors, so even if you shoot with an APS-C camera, you’ll still see very heavy vignetting at the edges of the frame.

Here are some example photos captured by Stern with the Angenieux 25mm f/0.95:

“I think you should not buy this lens,” Stern says, “because it’s a lot of money for a lens that’s pretty useless most of the time […] You should buy this lens if you find it for under €100 (~$111)… and you will be really lucky.”
