I Found a Camera Graveyard in a Newspaper Basement

cameragraveyard

My name is Dewey, and I work at a newspaper in Texas. Our building is from the early 1950s, and recently I discovered a camera graveyard in our basement.

The vast basement area has many original items, and when I opened a cabinet, I saw this camera equipment looking back at me. They must have been used by our photographers at some point.

The condition of some of the cameras and lenses were marked when they were put into storage. Some say “excellent condition,” others say “junk don’t fix,” and others are labeled “shutter bad.”

We have all of this gear in a secure area now, and I’ve offered to make a nice display cabinet in the newspaper’s lobby. A lot of people may want to buy the collection, but I doubt if they will be sold.

There could be other camera graveyards at our newspaper, as the newsroom is in another building separate from this basement. We also have many filing cabinets fill with archived negatives, and I bet these cameras were responsible for many of them!
