National Geographic today announced the winners of its 2015 International Photography Contest for Kids. A total of 17,530 entries were submitted from young photographers from around the world (between the ages of 6 and 14). There was also simultaneously a US-only contest.
Here are the winning photos from both competitions:
Grand Prize (Int): Senne Mensink, 13, The Netherlands
Grasshopper on Sunflower Leaf. “This grasshopper is eating a leaf. I took this photo in the garden, there was the grasshopper eating. He had eaten a hole in the leaf. The sun was shining, that’s why you can see the body through the leaf. I took the picture with my mother’s phone. This was in the summer.”
This was also the 1st place winner for the “Amazing Animals” category.
Grand Prize (US): Logan Wagner, 12, Cornelius, North Carolina
Bridge of Mystery. “A foggy day on the Mile High Swinging Bridge of Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina.”
This was also the 1st place winner for the “Dare to Explore” category.
1st Place (US) for Amazing Animals: Kathryn Kovacic, 9, Kennesaw, Georgia
Green Tree Snake. “A green tree snake wraps itself around a tree.”
1st Place (Int) for Dare to Explore: Georgieva Todorova, 8, Bulgaria
Even the Longest Tunnel Has an End. “Even the longest tunnel ends up with light. The Erma river gorge, Bulgaria”
1st Place (Int) for Weird But True: Verdier, 11, Ireland
Headstone. “Quirky picture of his cute little sister after she’d been buried under the sparkling stones of Ballyhillin Beach in Co. Donegal, Ireland by her dad.”
1st Place (US) for Weird But True: Chase Rodi, 13, San Diego, California
Thermal Pool Of Yellowstone. “This photo shows the weird and mystifying colors of the thermal pool in Yellowstone National Park. The colors are actually made up of very old bacteria boiling water.”
1st Place (Int) for Wild Vacation: Henry Downing, 10, United States
Over Our Heads. “Photo was taken at the International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico”
3,000 photos were received for the US contest this time. The grand prize winners of both contests, along with the category winners in the US, will be featured in the May 2016 issue of National Geographic Kids magazine, which has a readership of about 4 million.
Mensink, the winner of the international contest, will be awarded a 5-day, 4-night trip to Washington D.C. and a personal tour of the National Geographic headquarters.
