Body camera footage has just been released after the shooting of an Ohio photojournalist by a deputy who mistook his tripod for a gun.
New Carlisle News photographer Andy Grimm was shot Monday evening after pulling out his camera and tripod to take pictures of a traffic stop. Deputy Jake Shaw, thinking Grimm had pulled a rifle out of his Jeep, opened fire. One bullet grazed Grimm’s arm and the other one hit him in the side.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office released the 7-minute video above of the incident, which starts with the shots fired and Shaw running over to the fallen Grimm. Shaw and Grimm know each other, and Shaw can be heard profusely apologizing, calling for paramedics, and reassuring the photographer.
“Oh my God! Call my wife,” Grimm says. “Please call my wife.”
“Stay strong with me brother, I love you,” Shaw tells Grimm. “I’m sorry, brother. Listen, Andy… I’m sorry, dude… you pulled [the camera gear] out like a gun, dude… Dude, I thought that was a freakin’ gun, Andy.”
“I thought you saw me wave and flash my lights,” Grimm tells Shaw. “You weren’t looking. That’s my fault. I don’t want you to lose your job for this.”
Grimm had surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
Cleveland.com reports that the 25-year-old Shaw has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
