Google’s WiFi System Will Blanket Your Photo Studio with Smart, Spotless WiFi

Perfect WiFi—much like “jumbo shrimp” and “effective government”—is usually an oxymoron; when it comes to your photo studio or home office, it can also be a huge pain. But have no fear, Google has come to the rescue.

Originally announced in October, Google’s take on WiFi (named, appropriately, Google WiFi) is now available for you to pre-order. The system involves using one or more intelligent access points, which you place all around your workspace to eliminate dead zones. The whole setup is then controlled from a mobile app that gives you unprecedented control over your network.

Here’s a quick video intro from Google:

The system claims to work seamlessly, switching WiFi ‘channels’ on the fly to ensure you have the fastest connection all the time, and handing you off from one access point to another without interruption. Plus, the network gives you both control and feedback through that mobile app—so you can see what’s using the most WiFi where, move access points to better blanket an area, or even pause individual access points.

It’s not a lens or camera body or monolight, but having a solid wireless signal in your photo studio is critical. We’re genuinely excited to see if Google WiFi lives up to the hype.

Google WiFi is now available for pre-order from the Google Store, Amazon, BestBuy, and Walmart. A single unit—good for a small apartment or studio—will run you $130; a three-pack for much larger homes costs $300.
