Leica today announced a new version of the Leica M-P digital rangefinder, and this one is animal themed… The new “Panda Edition” M-P is designed to pay tribute to the panda, a “Chinese National Treasure,” Leica says.
The uber-limited edition camera will be offered in 2 different kits: one with a 28mm f/2 lens and one with a 35mm f/1.4 one. Only 30 units of each set will be manufactured and will only be sold in China.
“German technology combined with the traditional national treasure – the panda,” Leica says. “Timeless symbols of a black body is a classical tradition while highlighted with flawless white calm, brings unique color and imagery of the Chinese national treasure; the panda. This cleverly echoes past Oriental artistry.”
The metal portions of the camera body feature a special white paint, which sits alongside the black leather trim and the black buttons and dials.
On the back of the camera is an additional engraving with a panda and the words “Chengdu China.”
The Panda Edition Leica M-P are available now from select Leica stores in China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The price? About $14,000.
