It looks like Canon is working on something… different. A leaked spec sheet shows the Japanese camera giant may soon release a “W-E1” WiFi adapter that fits inside your camera’s SD card slot.
The spec sheet, which was leaked by the folks at digicame-info, doesn’t outright mention anything about how the W-E1 adapter is shaped or used, but the dimensions give it away. At 24.0mm x 32.0mm x 2.1mm, the W-E1 is slated to be the exact same size as a typical SD card.
Beyond that, it seems to work just like any other adapter. It’ll let you connect to a smartphone to view and transfer files, and there’s mention of controlling the camera wirelessly from your smartphone once the adapter is hooked up. Check out the full spec sheet below:
We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for this one. In the meantime, Canon EyeFi users who were upset by the company’s recent “update” may have something to look forward to.
