Panasonic’s powerful new GH5 was one of the (if not the) most exciting camera announcements of CES 2017. And now that it’s officially announced, we’re starting to see what it can do in the real world.
The Micro Four Thirds camera is targetted primarily at filmmakers who want top notch performance in a highly portable package, and that includes, it seems, stellar low light performance. Nick Driftwood, who has been helping to test and develop the GH5, posted the sample video above showing how the camera handles every ISO between 200 and 12800.
This little triptych shows the difference between ISO 200, ISO 1600, and ISO 12800:
The whole clip was shot handheld and, according to The Phoblographer, it was captured at 4K/60p, 4:2:0, and 158 Mbps in H.264 Level High 5.2. The lens used is a Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 and the picture profile used was Standard at -3,-3,-3,-3.
According to Driftwood, the GH5 is a “definite improvement over GH4” of “about two thirds of a stop” in terms of dynamic range. That is no small feat, as the surprisingly clean footage well shows. Check out the video to see for yourself.
