Adobe is Building a Siri-like Assistant for Editing Photos with Your Voice

Intelligent virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are quickly picking up skills and popularity. But what if your Adobe apps had a similar feature? What if Adobe designed a virtual assistant that would let you edit photos using voice commands?

The Adobe Research team is working on just that, and they created this video to “envision” the future and show off what their AI assistant can already do.

“We combined the emerging science of voice interaction with a deep understanding of both creative workflows and the creative aspirations of our customers,” explains Adobe. “Our speech recognition system is able to directly accept natural user voice instructions for image editing either locally through on-device computing or through a cloud-based Natural Language understanding service.”

Instead of bothering with sliders and shortcuts, you can enable the virtual assistant (let’s call her Annie) and make basic edits without ever touching your tablet’s screen. Something tells us complex edits won’t soon be made using voice commands—it’ll probably always be faster and more effective to edit by hand if you know what you’re doing—but there are a plethora of creative possibilities here.

This video is, of course, just the beginning. In Adobe’s words, it’s “a first step towards a robust multimodal voice-based interface which allows our creative customers to search and edit images in an easy and engaging way using Adobe mobile applications.” So… what do you think?
