Magnum photographer David Hurn has had the type of career one dreams of. He photographed stars like the Beatles and Sean Connery, and worked during what he describes as one of the friendliest eras in professional photography. But can you guess what one piece of advice he always gives his students? “Wear good shoes.”
That little tidbit—which is probably worth a lot more than the chuckle it elicits—is how Hurn’s 9-minute interview with the folks at YouPic ends, but it’s far from the only bit of wisdom he shares. And that’s not even mentioning the stories he tells.
Check out the video below to see it all for yourself. (Warning: One 5 second portion of the video is NSFW. Skip from 5:20 to 5:27 to avoid that image.)
Two parts struck us in particular. The first, where Hurn talks about the fact that photography is made up of two things: where you stand, and when you press the shutter. The second, how he marvels at the capabilities of modern cameras.
