There are plenty of tutorials on the web for how to create DIY ring lights, but this build has a unique take. The 10-minute video by Caleb Pike of DSLR Video Shooter will take you through the steps required to build a triangular “ring” LED light that can be dimmed.
This triangular “ring” light will create a unique catch light a little different to the normal donut shape. You could of course also use it as a dimmable side light or use it to take some interesting product shots.
Here are the parts used:
- Aluminum LED U channels
- 90 CRI LED Stripes OR 80 CRI LED Stripes
- Box for the electronics (glued to one corner of the triangle)
- Red/black wiring
- Dimmer
- DC input jack
- 12V power cable
- 12V battery
- Cable for 12V battery OR
- USB battery
- Adapter for USB battery
The video at the top is broken down in to the following sections:
- 1:54 – The Build
- 4:05 – Wiring Diagram
- 7:23 – Power Options
The build will require some soldering, but the video will walk through the steps and it is actually quite a simple process. The total cost for the project was around $92, but Pike says you could reduce the cost by using cheaper LED strips.
