In a world where almost everybody has a camera in their pocket, it is a big challenge to find new perspectives and to find new ways to amaze people. But if you look very carefully, there is still enough left to discover.
My name is Renzo Gerritsen and I am a 22-year-old photography student in Amsterdam. During my first year at school, I’ve made a big personal discovery. As my ambitions start to grow, I see the possibilities that Amsterdam has to offer. I see opportunities that are not yet realized.
I have always been fascinated by night photography. I could dream my time away by looking at the skyline of Paris, Dubai or New York, but then I realized that I go to school in a city with the same beauty: Amsterdam.
There are a lot of photographers who try night photography in Amsterdam, but they mostly shoot the same places like Dam Square, the canals or the Rijksmuseum over and over again. I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. That’s why I started to look for different and unique vantage points.
Fortunately, Amsterdam has a few buildings from which you can photograph the city. They’re not always accessible for public, but I did it. Don’t ask me how, but I did it! I photographed the skyline of Amsterdam with new perspectives.
I wanted to show that you don’t always have to travel far to find the beauty in life. I’ve found my kind of beauty in my own country and to put your heart and soul in it like I did feels absolutely great. Don’t forget to set your goals, because what seems to be far away, may be closer than you think.
