The British company Bullitt yesterday announced its new Cat S60 rugged smartphone, the world’s first to feature a built-in thermal imaging camera. The product is essentially a fusion between Bullitt’s Cat smartphones and FLIR’s thermal camera technology.
The phone has a 4.7-inch, super bright, 720p, Gorilla Glass screen and is rugged enough to survive drops from 1.8 meters (~5.9 feet) and swims to depths of 5 meters (~16.4 feet) for an hour.
On the back of the phone, you’ll find 2 different camera modules: one is a standard 13-megapixel camera that shoots ordinary photos, and the other is a special FLIR-made thermal camera that provides a heat view of the world around you.
You can use the camera to see and measure heat from up to 100 feet away. One application for the camera is seeing locations where heat is being lost in a home. Another may be for firefighters to be able to see straight through smoke when navigating through a burning home.
Ideal for builders, electricians, emergency services, utility workers and so many more, the thermal camera can be used to almost endless effect, saving time and money by detecting heat loss around windows, spotting moisture and finding overheating appliances,” Cat phones says.
Other specs of the camera include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, a die cast frame, a touchscreen that works with wet fingers, a 5MP front camera, dual flash units, 4G LTE, and Android Marshmallow.
The Cat S60 will have a price tag of $599 when it’s launched at the end of May 2016.
