The Chinese smartphone company Nubia has unveiled the Red Magic 3, a phone that shoots 48-megapixel photos and 8K video. The performance of the device is so intense that it features liquid cooling via a copper heat pipe and a built-in cooling fan.
The Red Magic 3 is marketed as a smartphone that excels at gaming, but it’s beast on the photography and video fronts as well.
Inside the phone is a 1/2.0″ Sony IMX586 sensor for 48-megapixel f/1.7 rear photos. The front features a 16-megapixel f/2.0 camera.
On the video front, the smartphone sets new records among smartphones by offering 8K video recording as well as 1920fps high-speed video for super slow motion.
To cool the internals down, the phone uses a special heat pipe and a fan that spins at up to 14,000 rpm to provide 5 times the heat transfer performance of conventional passive cooling systems. The internal fan is protected within an IP55-rated chamber that keeps liquids and dust out, and it’s rated for 30,000 hours of use.
Other specs and features of the Red Magic 3 include Android 9 Pie, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, up to 12GB of RAM, up to 256GB storage, a 5,000mAh battery, USB quick charge, a 6.65-inch FHD+ AMOLED display (with HDR and 90Hz refresh), stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The phone will cost just ¥2,899 to ¥4,299 ($430 to $640) — for 6GB RAM and 64GB storage on the lowest end and 12GB RAM and 256GB storage on the highest end — when it launches in China on May 3rd and it’s scheduled to launch in the US later the same month. No word yet on what the official US dollar price tag will be.
