Nikon Unveils the Ultra-Wide 14-30mm f/4 S Lens for the Nikon Z

Nikon has unveiled its new NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S, the first ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for the Nikon Z full-frame mirrorless camera system.

“This newest S-Line NIKKOR lens is a popular focal length for landscape, travel, event and architecture photographers, offering a combination of performance and portability that’s only possible with Nikon’s revolutionary new Z Mount,” Nikon says.

Nikon says the lens’ new optical design takes advantage of the Z Mount’s large diameter for improved optical performance and optimization for high-megapixel cameras.

And despite the lens going as wide as 14mm, its front element is nearly flat, making it the first ultra-wide-angle zoom covering 14mm that allows filters (it supports 82mm screw-on filters) to be attached to the front.

The lens is also ultra light and portable: it measures just 3.5-inches (8.9cm) long when retracted and weighs just 1.07lbs (485g). Compared to the Nikon 16-35mm f/4G ED VR lens, the new 14-30mm is 32% shorter and 28.6% lighter. And compared to the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, the new lens is 35% shorter and 51.5% lighter.

Other features and specs of the new 14-30mm f/4 S include “unparalleled control of distortion and chromatic aberration,” Nikon anti-reflective Nano Crystal Coat that reduces ghosting and flare, a fluorine coat that repels dust/water/grease/dirt, Stepping Motor (STM) tech for smooth/fast/quiet AF, a customizable Control Ring, and optimized video performance (focus breathing reduction).

Here are some sample photos shot using the new 14-30mm:

The new NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S lens will be available in the spring of 2019 with a price tag of $1,300.
